Siyi Zhu

Ph.D. Candidate in Human–computer interaction

Siyi Zhu is a PhD candidate at the University of Maryland, College Park, studying human–computer interaction. His research explores how technologies can make relationships among dispersed qualitative scholarly information such as claims, evidence, and hypotheses more perceptible and interactive. Through research through design, he investigates “sense-able” representations that materialize intangible properties of scholarly information, such as the strength of claims and conflicts among pieces of evidence. His work examines how researchers adapt hypertext note-taking tools to revisit and reuse ideas across fragmented sense-making sessions. Drawing inspiration from modern art and design, his current research develops spatial and embodied mixed-reality interfaces that complement text and papers as representations of scholarly information to support “sense-able” sense-making.
